Field Visit (12 August 1997)
Sometime before 1978 a fragment of a Class 1 Pictish stone, measuring 0.33m by 0.32m and up to 0.12m in thickness, was discovered whilst repairing a dyke c.200m E of Coynach Hill. It is now kept at Tillypronie House (NJ40NW 136). It lies upon the N wall of the terrace immediately adjacent to the W elevation of the dwelling, E of a small iron gate (NJ 4326 0795). The carving, which has been cut upon a metamorphic rock and underscored with an engraved line, shows the legs of two figures whose tunics reach just below the knee.
Pictish stones are known from St. Finan's Church, Migvie (NJ40NW2) and from Tom a' Char, (also at Tillypronie, NJ40NW7), but there is no reason to assume that this fragment is derived from either of these sites. Indeed, the context in which it was found suggests that the stone may not have travelled far from its original location.
Visited by RCAHMS (ATW, JRS), 12 August 1997.
