This wooden goods shed with its corrugated iron roof is situated just to the NW of Brora station building.
Information from RCAHMS (MKO), 23 June 1997.
This is a wooden goods shed of the standard Highland Railway type of batten and board construction and dates from around 1895. This shed is a 3-bay by 1-bay wooden building (DC52081, DC52082 and DC52083) with a corrugated iron pitched roof. It may have originally been painted oxide red and retains its original eave detail as well as its cast-iron guttering (DC52082), although this is in a state of disrepair. The roof may originally have been of slate. There is a square brick chimney of the NW that heated the small internal office at the NW corner. The window detailing has been lost, but the window arrangement on the NE and NW elevations survives along with the sliding doors on the N, S and E (possibly replaced). All sliding door mechanisms appear to be original. There are circular, louvered ventilation windows at the apex of the N and S gables. The portico over the handling doors on the W elevation, visible in a photograph of 19754 (SC435361), is now gone. The ‘scar’ of the portico can be seen in RCAHMS DP034460.
The interior consists of a track bed although the rails have been taken up. There is a wooden loading platform 1.20m in overall height running the length of the E wall. This allowed the loading and unloading to, or from, a vehicle on the road. There is also an interior office at the SE end of the loading bay area with its original wooden work bench and fireplace. The roof is a king post truss.
The rail link to Brora was completed in 1871 having been taken over by the Highland Railway (Nock, 47). The original 1871 goods shed was located at NC 9064 0412. This site is now occupied by the current station building of 1895. The goods station is depicted and named on the 2nd edition of the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (Sutherlandshire, 1906).
The site was surveyed and recorded by RCAHMS as a good example of a wooden Highland Railway building.
