Archaeology Notes

HU59NE 7 5994 9951.

A low, flat cairn to the west of HU69NW 7 was excavated by Hunt in July, 1865, but yielded no result.

J Hunt 1866.

At HU 5992 9951 is a heel-shaped cairn. It appears as a turf-covered stony mound c.1.0m high. 4.5m of a curved facade faces SE, with a large upright block 2.5m to the SW. Five other earth-fast stones, set on edge, define the kerb elsewhere giving measurements 8.2m across the facade and a probable 6.0m front to back. There is no trace of ei ther chamber or cist.

A small modern rectangular building has utilized the facade as one of its walls.

Immediately to the NW is a rectangular hollow bounded by piles of stone. This may be Hunt's excavation.

Visited by OS(RL) 1st May 1969.
