NS79SE 196 7988 9000 to 780 949 (RR 7)

NS c. 7854 9446 to NS c. 7807 9499. Course of Roman Road (approximate line).

W Edgar 1743

NS 7930 9241 to NS 7924 9257 Wall on bank suggestive of Roman causeway

NS 7919 9267 and NS 7918 9273 Road seen before 1907 at 18, 20 and 27 Snowdon Place

NS 7915 9283 Road seen at 19 Park Terrace before 1907

NS 7910 9293 to NS 780 949 Line of Roman Road between Stirling and Dunblane not known. Field investigation proved negative.

OGS Crawford 1949

NS 7999 9106 to NS 7934 9235 From Croftsidepark (NS 808 881) to Stirling the OS line is very doubtful as it depends on the mid 19th century factor of Plean estate and contradicts the two earliest authorities, Edgar (1745) and Nimmo (1777).

Edgar's road kept close to the E side of the A80 to NS 796 914, where it crossed to the W side and diverged slightly further to the W before disappearing outside Stirling. Nimmo seems to confirm this line.

RCAHMS 1963

NS 7927 9193 Excavation revealed road 6.7m wide. No surface indication.

NS 7920 9264 Excavation revealed road 6.7m wide. No surface indication.

D J Milne 1971

(NS 7919 9268) NS 792 928 A further section Roman Road within Stirling Burgh has been excavated in a private garden. Under 0.9m of topsoil, this undisturbed base course of closely packed, fist sized stones, again reveal a neat edge to the road. Only 20mm of fine gravel, containing particles of unburnt coal, remains on top of this base course. Assuming the same 6.7m width as previously, this puts the road centre at NS 79158 928818. This section is only a few yards further N than those previously reported, the edges are in alignment and so enable a more accurate projection of the line to be made. It shows the previously reported W turn to be an 11 degree change in direction, and to occur at NS 79196 92684.

D J Milne 1972

NS 7917 9276 Excavation revealed road 6.7m wide. No surface indication.

D J Milne 1971

NS 7915 9281 Section dug across road showed that road had turned westwards through 11 degrees

D R Wilson 1973

NS 7999 9106 to NS 7934 9235 no trace of either course on ground

NS 7910 9293 to NS 780 949 Course of Roman Road not established

Note (1979)

Roman Road, Stirling District

Most of the evidence for the course of the section of the Roman road from Camelon to Ardoch that lies within Stirling District has been summarised in the Inventory of Stirlingshire. Recent trial excavations in the vicinity of Stirling tends to confirm the line recorded in the 19th century; a possible road causeway, however, situated 90m W of Randolphsfield House has not been tested. North of Dunblane, in what was formerly Perthshire, the course of the road has been recorded for a distance of 1.6km between NS 793 044 and NS 806 054.
