The large spoil tips of Balbackie coal mines are visible in air photographs (RCAHMSAP 1995) amidst woodland 1km S of Harthill. The larger spoil tip (CSW 5084; NS 9055 6305) overlies a series of coal mines recorded as 'old coal pits' on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1855-9, sheet ix), located approximately at NS 9060 6310 (CSW 5056), NS 9051 6305 (CSW 5057), and NS 9055 6290 (CSW 5058). The spoil heap is recorded on the OS 2nd-edition map (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet ix SE), with a 'dismantled tramway' running off to the NNW, and a mineral railway to the S. By the time of the revised edition of this map (1916), the mineral railway was also dismantled. 150m to the SE is a second, smaller, rectangular spoil tip (NS 9084 6264; CSW 5089), depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Linlithgowshire 1854-5, sheet xi NE) with a dismantled railway leaving it to the S.
