Archaeology Notes

NH56SE 6 5602 6029.

(Area: NH 562 604) There are kitchen-middens on the ridge-line of the old sea beach within 200 yds of Killechoan Church (NH56SE 5).

N Macrae 1923.

A poorly preserved shell-midden was pointed out by Mr Woodham (A A Woodham, St Brights, Kiltearn) at NH 5602 6029 near the top of an eroded raised beach.

Shell midden - seen.

Fragments and whole shells eroding down slope which is actively and seriously eroding - land slip. Oyster, dogwhelk and periwinkle with cockle shells noted. Tree cover on slope is being under mined. Site lies at top of steep bare earth slope at rear of railway line of railway bridge. Two fragments of worked quartz also noted. Site sits on front of promontory. Rabbit activity also noted.
