Archaeology Notes

NT07NW 97 Centred 0460 7790

The remains of a heavy anti-aircraft battery are visible on vertical air photographs (visible on RAF CPE/Scot/UK/216, 3025-6, flown 1947), situated in a field immediately S of Merrylees and N of the M9 motorway. Identified from the air photographs are the following elements of the battery; a four gun emplacement with command position to the NE, the GL-mat (radar platform) to the E and the accommodation camp immediately to the W. What may be further accommodation buildings lie some 300m to the S.

The battery consisted of four 3.7-inch mobile AA guns later altered to static. The battery was designated RSG 3 by the War Office.

The site is now occupied by a small industrial unit.
