Excavation (1988 - 1989)
A trial excavation was carried out by SUAT (Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust) in 1988 on the site of the demolished Calender Works at 53-73 Cowgate (136 Seagate) prior to construction of sheltered housing. Most of the site had been destroyed by cellars except for a raised area in the north-west, supposedly the site of a medieval chapel. No evidence of early occupation was produced.
A follow up watching brief during construction took place in 1989, in which a stone built well or cistern was noted measuring 3m high, 2.2m wide externally at the top and bottom. The spoil tip of its fill contained a 19th century glass bottle.
