(NH 4498 4084) Dun (NR)

OS 25"map, (1968)

At the NE end of a prominent elongated knoll running NE-SW are the reduced remains of a dun, noted as a fort by the RCAHMS (Visited by RCAHMS 1957)

It is sub-oval on plan, bounded by the tumbled remains of a dry-stone wall giving internal measurements of c. 21.0m NE-SW by 18.0m. In the S and W the wall is spread to c. 5.5m and is c. 0.8m in height. No wall faces can be seen. In the N and E where the dun is fronted by a low cliff, only a few stones protruding through the turf mark the course of the wall. The most likely position of the entrance is in the NE where a cleft in the cliff provides an easy approach.

A modern structure is built within the wall in the SW.

Activities

Field Visit (2 November 1943)

This site was recorded as part of the RCAHMS Emergency Survey, undertaken by Angus Graham and Vere Gordon Childe during World War 2. The project archive has been catalogued during 2013-2014 and the material, which includes notebooks, manuscripts, typescripts, plans and photographs, is now available online.

Information from RCAHMS (GF Geddes) 12 November 2014.

Field Visit (March 1979)

Craigdhu NH 449 408 NH44SW 3

This dun occupies the NE end of the crags above Craigdhu and measures about 21m by 18m within two opposing arcs of wall; the SW arc is spread about 5.5m in thickness and 0.8m in height but the NE arc has been severely reduced and the circuit does not appear to have been continuous.

RCAHMS 1979, visited March 1979
