Archaeology Notes

NX44SW 56.07 4449 4028

(7) This is the only complete example of a headstone of the Whithorn School found at Whithorn. This is one of the earliest, and dates from the 10th century.

The circular head has a small central boss and expanded arms, the terminals of which are separated by shallow grooves; there are circular sinkings between the arms. The plain cross has a slight beaded outline. The shaft is filled with a single panel of firmly designed interlace. The roughly dressed back is plain.

Radford and Donaldson 1953b, 40.
