Archaeology Notes

NT17NE 122.01 Centred 1634 7869

A heavy anti-aircraft battery is visible on vertical air photographs, (RAF 106G/Scot/UK 10, 5152-3, flown 1946) in an area to the NW of Barnbougle Castle.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) April 1997

This anti-aircraft battery is visible on post-war RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 117, 5009-10, flown 29 May 1946; 106G/Scot/UK 140, Pt II, 5124-6, flown 3 July 1946; CPE/Scot/UK 256, PtIV, 5389-95, flown 11 August 1947) and shows that it had four emplacements and control centre with a Nissen hutted camp to the SW. The battery has now been removed, but examination of the site reveals one or two hut bases.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), 5 December 2001.
