Archaeology Notes

NO45SE 134 c. 456 509

Not to be confused with Forfar 2 logboat (NO 4574 5087), for which see NO45SE 22.

(Forfar 1). In 1952 it was noted that a 'dugout' had been found in Forfar ninety years before; the boat was found 'near where Castle Motors Garage now stands'. It was apparently not recorded in detail, but lay in Forfar cemetery for a long time until it disintegrated.

Forfar Castle is said to have stood at NO 456 508, Castle Street extends from NO 4560 5094 to 4559 5061, and Castle Motors Garage was presumably one of the two garages that are noted on the 1972 edition of the OS map at NO 4559 5094 and 4564 5091 respectively.

The area is situated at an altitude of about 57m OD and has probably been occupied by a continuation of the Loch of Forfar to the E of the ridge upon which stands the core of the burgh itself.
