Archaeology Notes

NS88SE 89 unlocated

Possibly to be located on map sheet NS87NE, and within Falkirk, Grangemouth or Larbert parishes. Not to be confused with the logboat from the 'River Carron', for which see NS88SE 88.

Forsyth notes that 'a complete boat' was found near Falkirk 'some years' before 1805; it was found 'five fathoms deep in the clay'. He is probably describing the discovery of a logboat in the same extensive area of estuarine carseland as that from the River Carron (NS88SE 88); the considerable depth of the discovery (9.1m) suggests a similarly early date.

Wilson locates this discovery more specifically 'in the immediate vicinity of Falkirk' but states no evidence for doing so.

R O Forsyth 1805-8; D Wilson 18637; R Munro 1898; R J C Mowat 1996.
