Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Field Visit (24 September 2002)

The east doorway is flanked by two harlequin-trousered figures, the one on the left (east) composed of a large red, yellow and blue doublebass with a gold violin as its head. Facial features are painted briefly in red. The figure on the right is a pair of high-kicking legs with golden masks of comedy and tragedy in the middle. The west doorway is flanked by a figure on the left, composed of a red artist's easel with a golden 'painting' on it, across which lies a blue brush. The head is a smiling artist's palette. The figure on the right sits on a pile of multi-coloured books and is composed of a golden scroll above green and red harlequin legs. On the scroll sits a green quill in a black inkpot. An open smiling book forms the head, a closed book the neck. Above the head is a further pile of books.
