Architecture Notes

Barringer's Close is given thus on Edgar 1742, but no derivation has been found either for this name or for two others current in the previous century, which appear as "Mrs Mure's Close, of old Alexr Don's Close" in 1697, and in earlier forms such as "Mistress Mourisch's Close" in 1658, and "Mistress Murie's or Alex Doune's Close" in 1669, while the good lady (unless there was an unrecorded Mrs Menzies) was perhaps still remembered in 1764 as "Mrs Minish Close". (from Stuart Harris, "Place Names of Edinburgh", 1996, page 82)
