Archaeology Notes

NJ91NE 29 centred 9723 1785

Vertical aerial photography (OS 75/296/009) has revealed the cropmarks of rig-and-furrow cultivation immediately N of Balmedie Sewage Works. The identifiable area of cultivation measures about 130m from E to W by 60m transversely and includes furrows on two separate alignments set at right-angles to each other; the rig in the W part of the area is aligned from ENE to WSW, whilst that on the E is aligned NNW and SSE. There are no visible remains on the ground.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF) 1 April 1996.

(Location cited as NJ 9725 1782 and nominated as Site of Regional Significance). Air photography (AAS/82/12/S13/18-19, flown 20 July 1982) has recorded the cropmarks of rig-and-furrow cultivation and a rectilinear enclosure surrounded by buildings on a gentle slope at an altitude of 13m OD.
