Archaeology Notes

NJ02NE 24 NJ 0669 2685

Nothing is visible of the farmhouse referred to in the previous report and its site is now occupied by a modern bungalow. The remains of a range (NJ 06713 26821), its NW end entirely robbed and the remainder reduced to grass-grown footings, can be seen 35m SSE of the new house. A limekiln (NJ 06785 26836) is situated in rough pasture 90m SE of the house. Only the NW side of the kiln pot is visible within a subsquare grass-grown mound of rubble that measures up to 8m across by 1m in height.

The farmstead is depicted roofed on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Elginshire 1874, sheet XXXIII; 1905, sheet XXXIII.NW). On the later map the kiln is annotated 'Old Limekiln'
