Field Visit (10 July 1930)

Standing Stone, Hill of Cruester. In a prominent position on the Hill of Cruester, about half a mile N of Gardie House, and at an elevation of slightly over 100 ft. above sea level, is a rude sandstone monolith (Fig. 644, SH 13) 9 ft. 6 in. high and 4 ft 6 in. wide at the base, with a thickness of roughly 6 in. It tapers as it rises, being only 2 ft. 7 in. wide at 6 ft. above ground. It is set up with its major axis WNW and ESE, but has now a very decided tilt to the SSW. There are traces of packing round the base.
