NT 282 727. Three 0.5 sq. m. trial pits were excavated to a depth of 1m in advance of a small extension to the car park at Duddingston Loch, a site sometimes associated with the medieval settlement recorded in the placename of Treverlen. These pits revealed hillwash deposits to the full depth of 1m, probably deriving from the formerly cultivated lands overlooking the site from the N and NW. Sherds of 19th-century stoneware pottery were recovered from close to the base of the deposit, suggesting that any medieval remains in the area must be buried at a minimum depth of 1m, and possibly substantially more.
Subsequent car park construction involved the removal of only 75mm of surface deposits.
