Archaeology Notes

NJ62NW 62 centred 6447 2852

(Name cited as Whitehall). An underground building is all that survives of a firing range in mixed woodland on a NW-facing slope. No known record survives of its use, but it was probably built in the 19th century and may have belonged to a volunteer company. A 19th Corps was formed at Insch in 1867.

NMRS, MS/712/10.

The field to the NE of the stated location (around NJ 6460 2860) is named as 'The Target' on the 1:10,000 map of 1982.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 20 September 1996.
