Archaeology Notes

NS56SE 93 593 647

A strip c.10m wide was opened from the Bridgegate northwards, revealing the cellared foundations of the buildings fronting on Bridgegate itself, with its backcourt area heavily disturbed by the last demolition in 1971.

Further N, patches of pre-1895 material were uncovered between the foundations of a tenement block. A group of medieval cesspits containing pottery were also found.

Activities

Watching Brief (18 March 2015 - 26 March 2015)

NS 5930 6470 A watching brief was undertaken, 18–26 March 2015, during the installation of temporary artwork, a seating area and trees. The remains of substantial sandstone foundations were uncovered, which probably relate to The Bridgegate Free Church or Briggait Kirk, constructed in 1860. The wall foundations and adjacent 19th-century ceramic waste pipes were preserved in situ.
