Archaeology Notes

NF97SE 5 9640 7192.

A dun is said locally to have existed in a large loch on the Portain peninsula, "high up near Crogary na Hoc" Beveridge maintains this description apparently points to Loch na Cointich, which has two islets. He adds that although neither appeared at a short distance to support a dun, he is of the opinion that one formerly existed.

E Beveridge 1911.

No trace of a dun was found on the larger islet in Loch na Cointich, and the only possible site for one could have been on the islet at NF 9640 7192, although this, too, is doubtful, as it measures some 5 x 3.0m in its present state. No trace of a causeway was found leading from any part of the shore to this small, rocky, islet, and the tumble of stones around it is not indicative of walling.

Visited by OS (R B) 24 June 1965.
