NH35NE 8 3787 5591

A township comprising eight roofed buildings, one unroofed building and three enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1881, sheet lxxxvi). Two roofed, two enclosures and some field walls are shown on the current edition of the 1:10000 map (1971).

Activities

Field Visit (21 May 2007 - 21 May 2007)

Srp Note (10 January 2011)

A township, enclosures and drove road (NOSAS site survey numbers 277-284 & 288) are centred on NH 380 559.

Parts of the former township buildings are occupied and more recent dwellings have been constructed on the site. The site is thought (by the owner of the main building) to have been a droving stance and his own house the old inn. The stone and turf footings of two other buildings (279 & 288) were identified as well a stone bridge abutment (280).

The immediate area to the W has been subject to considerable disturbance by the construction of the Meig Dam and reservoir, the diversion of the present motor road and by forestry.

Further details of these and other associated sites can be found in the Strathconon Phase 1 Report (pages 52 & 53) produced by the North of Scotland Archaeology Society and appended to this record.
