The CYCLOPS sank whilst on passage from Queensferry to Sunderland to be broken up.

Surveying Details

27 February 1924. The CYCLOPS sank at 56 04 15N, 002 33 30W or bearing 096 degree, 2.8 miles from Bass Rk light.

7 April 1993. The dredger was dived upon in August 1989 in 56 03 24.5N, 002 32 16W by GPS. Decca [northumbrian] red e 3.95, green d 47.49. Radar ranges - 3.60 miles from Bass Rock, 7.30 miles from the Isle of May, 2.54 miles from the nearest land. The vessel lies on its side and sunk into the silty seabed. It stands 3 metres high and there is a scour pit 1 metre deep. The bucket elevator can be seen.

Note; this plots into charted depth of 33 metres.

25 January 1994. The site was examined on 20 August 1993 in 56 03 28.1N, 002 32 04.2W. Decca [northumbrian] red e 3.9, green d 47.4. The wreck swept clear at 32.4 metres, but fouled at 32.9. The least echosounder depth was 32.3 in a general depth of 35.5 metres. The depth to the bottom of the scour was 36.6 metres. The side scan sonar indicated a height of 2.8 metres, length 45 metres (147 feet), and breadth 10 metres (32 feet). The wreck is partially broken and lying with its keel on an orientation of 000/180 degree.

Report by Oceonics (UK) Ltd. The sonar trace confirms that this is a wreck of a bucket dredger.
