Surveying Details

-----------------------------

9 August 1976. A new wreck was located at 57 41 58N, 003 51 05W, and fixed by moray firth hi-fix(u)chain patt1 176.31 patt2 155.00 and decca n.scot.chain(u)red i04.98 green a39.12 purple a70.78. The site was examined by close sounding, side scan sonar and transit sonar. The least depth over the wreck by echosounder was 27.0 metres. The general depth of the sea bed by echosounder was 29.0 metres. A scour, water depth by echosounder 29.8 metres, was also observed. The sea bed is of broken shell and fine sand. The depth datum was taken from Burghead or 2.10 metres below Ordnance Datum. The wreck lies with its keel orientated approximately 090/270 degrees and is about 40 metres long. The site was located during sonar search from one direction only on 30 June 1975 and was examined on 23 July 1975.

Report by HMS ECHO, 20 March 1976.

Hydrographic Office, 1995.

Guiding Star (possibly): date of loss cited as 12 January 1923. [No further information].

(Location of loss cited as N57 41.97 W3 51.08).

I G Whittaker 1998.

UKHO chart no. 1115 (1978, amended 1993) charts this wreck [Wk] at depth 27m, 4.6nm ENE of South Sutor. No seabed-type is noted nearby, and the seabed appears to be undulating.

The tentative suggestion (by Whittaker) that this wreck may be equated with the documented loss of the Guiding Star(NJ06NW 8001) remains unverified.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 21 April 2011.
