Circumstances of Loss Details

-----------------------------

The TRSAT was bombed and sunk by German aircraft whilst on passage from Reykjavic to Hull.

Source: World War II Shipping Loses.

Surveying Details

-----------------------------

The vessel sank 7 miles NE by E from Kinnairds [Kinnaird] Head.

Report from Rosyth naval base, 1941.

1945. A non submarine contact is included on the Rosyth wreck list with a poor position fix. The wreck is giving off oil.

20 June 1986. The wreck was examined on 12 February 1986 at 57 45 59N, 001 53 07W. The 4-range trisponder gave NGR eastings 406820, northings 875155 or decca (n scot) red d 18.35, green d 30.42, purple f 65.52. The least depth 55.4 in a general depth of 63.5 metres. No scour pits were observed. The side scan sonar indicated a height of 8.1 metres, and a length 68.4 metres. The keel is lying on an orientation of 105/285 degrees with the bows probably to the west.

Report by HMS BULLDOG.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

UKHO chart no. 115 (1978, revised 1993) charts this wreck [Wk] at a depth of 55m, 5.5nm NE of Kinnaird Head. No seabed type is indicated nearby, but several other wrecks are charted nearby.

In the absence of diver survey or the recovery of identifiable wreckage, the identity of this vessel remains unverified, but the leakage of oil indicates a date of loss within the 20th century.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 18 February 2011.
