Surveying Details

------------------------

5 August 1986. Possible wreckage was located by a local fishing skipper at 57 42 33N, 002 39 19W.

Report by HMS BULLDOG.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

(No location specified). The remains of a vessel known locally as the Moray are regularly visited by recreational divers from charter boats. The location is retained by the operators but may lie on map sheet NJ66NW: an equation with RCAHMS NJ66NW 8001 is suggested.

The remains lie on on a rocky shingle seabed in a general depth of about 30-32m, and are very broken, possibly as a result of salvage which is said to have taken place during the 1960's. There is a shallow reef (about 10m above the seabed) on the port side.

The vessel lies roughly SE (bow)-NW. There is a lot of scattered plating, as well as steel rods, piping, and an intact condenser. The boiler and (triple expansion) engine-block stand upright (3-4m above the seabed); the prop shaft and propeller are also evident, the last being of 4-bladed type with 2 of them snapped off. There are also various winches and pulley wheels, and what looks like a small donkey boiler. The anchors were not seen; they are said to be of Admiralty Pattern, but one issaid to have been raised in recent months.

Information from Mr S Adams (South Queensferry Sub-Aqua Club, BSAC 1262), 20 May 2006.

These remains may be equated with the recorded loss of the Moray (NJ56NE 8032), a steel steamship which foundered off Portsoy on 17 November 1893.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 July 2006.
