Surveying Details

------------------------

26 April 1967. The wreck was located at 56 49 30N, 002 12 36W by HMS BLACKWOOD, using sonar and echosounders, in general depths of 27.7 - 35.9 metres. The site was not found by HMS EGERIA, but it is reccommended that HMS BLACKWOOD's report be accepted because of superiority of her sonar equipment.

Report by HMS EGERIA, 28 June 1966.

6 November 1972. It is considered that this wreck must have the least safe clearance depth of 18.2 metres if not found by HMS EGERIA.

11 January 1977. A large wreck, standing 10.9 -14.6 metres high, was located at 56 49 30N, 002 12 36W, approximately. The site has not yet been dived upon, but it is thought possibly to be the TAURUS [see 56 49 25N, 002 09 25W].

Report by W Mojsiewicz, 20 December 1976.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

(Classified as motor vessel, with cargo of cocoa and ground nuts: date of loss cited as 6 June 1941). Taurus: this vessel was bombed by aircraft, taken in tow, bombed again, and finally sank. (5647/0215?)

Registration: Tonsberg. Built 1935. 4767grt. Length: 122m. Beam: 16m.

(Location of loss cited as N56 49.42 W2 9.42).

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 11 February 1918). Baku Standard (possibly): [no further information].

(Location of loss cited as N56 49.50 W2 12.60).

I G Whittaker 1998.

Material reported under RoW amnesty (2001):

A3082 2 maker's plates: from seabed

(Inscriptions not cited: no detailed location specified).

A4235 1 bell

(No accurate location cited).

NMRS, MS/829/35.

(Location entered as NO 8667 7047 [N56 49.5 W2 12.6]). The significance of this record remains unclear, and the wreck may be equated with that entered as NO97SW 8002 at cited location NO c. 904 702 [N56 49.4 W2 9.4]. It remains unclear from what location the artifacts reported under RoW amnesty (2001) were derived.

UKHO chart 210 (1976, revised 1995) charts this wreck as a sunken wreck 2.5nm E of Gourdon. No charted depth is specified for the wreck, but the general depth nearby is about 40m, and the seabed is of variable composition.

In the absence of diver or multibeam sonar survey, the identity and classification of this vessel remain unverified. The alternative identity (Baku Standard) that is cited by Whittaker also remains unverified.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 25 February 2004.
