Archaeology Notes

NS95SE 33.01 centred on 9780 5429

Formerly identified in field survey as lazy-beds, aerial photography has revealed this to be part of a much larger area of rig and furrow cultivation, centred on NS 9780 5429, and extending over at least four fields, from Droveloan Cottage, Haywood (NS95SE 33.00 9783 5467) and the adjoining dismantled railway to the N, as far S as Pool Colliery Pit No. 3 coal mine (NS97SE 39.02 9781 5384). Several different periods of rig overlie one another, and the rig appears to be spade dug at the field boundaries.
