First Edition Survey Project (FESP)

Jointly funded by Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, the First Edition Survey Project (FESP) was set up to address the growing concern about the state of knowledge of Scotland's medieval or later rural settlement. FESP provided a rapid and nationwide means of redressing the under-representation in the National Monuments Record of Scotland of data on the medieval and post-medieval rural settlement through recording those structures depicted as unroofed on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey (OS) 6-inch map. The survey recorded almost 26,000 sites and a summary was published as 'But the Walls Remained' in 2002.
