Shetland Burnt Mounds Project

A programme of survey and excavation examined over 20 previously recorded sites thought to be brunt mounds. All were situtated near to the coast and many were found to be affected by coastal erosion. Sites chosen for investigation covered a wide geographical area which included Shetland Mainland, Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Bressay, East Burra and West Burra Isles. In some cases, sites previously classified as burnt mounds were found not to be so, in other cases the sites had disappeared. Exposed sections were recorded, where available, but excavation was limited to one site, Tangwick burnt mound, Eshaness.
