HES Archaeological Survey: Isle of Arran Phase 2

Following on from the island-wide archaeological survey on Arran (Event 1036806) undertaken in 2017-2018, a targeted programme of detailed site and landscape surveys was undertaken in 2019 to better understand selected monuments on Arran.

The project was undertaken by members of the Archaeological Survey and Rapid Archaeological Mapping Project teams. This survey employed a number of approaches, including hand-drawn hachure survey, UAV survey, terrestrial laser scanning, and derivatives of Airborne Laser Scanning, to create interpretative drawn outputs, photography and accompanying text.

The primary objective of the project was to fill gaps in the NRHE of illustrative material, especially for sites on Arran that are rare elsewhere. The project also aimed to contribute to the development of approaches to digital documentation for detailed site surveys, and the assessment of digital data for interpretation and depiction.

Sites were selected for survey because of rarity, significance, group value or to improve interpretation. A number of new discoveries from the Arran Archaeological mapping project were included in the list of survey targets.
