An Archaeological Survey of the Balmacara Estate Phase III

Phase 3 of the archaeological survey of the National Trust for Scotland's Balmacara Estate. Phase 3 covered those parts of the Estate remaining unsurveyed after completion of Phases 1 and 2 in 1994 and 1995 (blue on plan). During the survey 61 previously unrecorded sites were located. These included pens and enclosures, areas of cultivation, a deserted settlement, several hut circles and an army camp overlooking the Kyle. A

number of small explosive stores were also recorded, all close to and presumably connected with, the construction of the railway.

1.1 The survey was carried out between May 20th and June 21st in mixed weather conditions. Survey was completed before bracken growth obscured the visible remains.

1.2 A written record of each site was kept on Dualchas site recording sheets. The more visible sites were photographed and where it was thought appropriate sketch surveys were made. Two of the sites; No 49 and No 67 were surveyed with a plane table at a scale of 1:200 and 1:500 respectively.

1.3 The site numbering system is a continuation of that used for the 1995 survey.
