Age of Industry

The Age of Industry explores the wealth of manufacturing and construction heritage across Scotland. From water power to wind power, discover the sites of an abandoned distillery and an island littered with slate quarries; learn the history of the construction of the Caledonian canal, and see the proud heritage of Lanarkshire's iron and steel manufacture. Discover aspects of Scotland's industrial heritage that have almost vanished from the landscape.

Slate Quarries - Easdale Island, Argyll And Bute

The industrial remains of Easdale continue to define the island's character, just as they have since the very earliest days of slate extraction.

Finzean water-powered mills - Lower Deeside, Aberdeenshire

Buckets, brooms and two-by -four - a local community has helped to ensure the continuing survival of three remarkable 19th century water-powered, wood-working sites in Aberdeenshire. Rubbing shoulders with the Water of Feugh (the main tributary to the River Dee), the three Category A listed water mills are situated within 1.6km of each other. These buildings represent not only a rare survival, but now also part of a community strategy of economic action, intending to enhance an already strong sense of place for those living around Finzean.
