Medieval ‘Viking’ Canal – Rubh’ An Dunain, Isle of Skye Highland

In a remote corner of the Isle of Skye there is a strange canal with no known parallels anywhere else in Scotland. It has no lock-gates, but instead utilises the rise and fall of the natural tides to allow or deny vessels access to a small lochen. A radiocarbon date from a boat timber found within this lochen suggests it was as an anchorage about 1100 AD.
