Age of Bronze

With the start of the Bronze Age came the appearance of wide-spread trade, metal working and the arrival of settlers from the continent, which brought great change to Scotland’s archaeological landscape during the Bronze Age. New burial practices and architectural styles, including hut circles, henges and field systems, were adopted across the country.

Cladh Hallan prehistoric village - Machair, South Uist

Cladh Hallan is one of only a handful of places in Britain where prehistoric mummies have been found, and provides a fascinating insight into Bronze Age life on South Uist. Excavations in the late 20th century uncovered three Bronze Age Roundhouses, built closely together in a form of terrace, and revealed an amazing secret hidden below.

Delfour ring cairn and stone circle - Alvie, Highland

There is a double ring of stones in a farmer's field on the west side of the Spey valley, about 4 miles south-west of Aviemore. They measure about 18m in diameter overall and there is a single tall standing stone to their south-west which seems to guard them. In fact, they are all components of a single monument, one of many found throughout Speyside, Easter Ross and Moray.
