Golf courses from the air

07/08/2014

As part of our aerial survey of the Scottish landscape, RCAHMS has been recording golf courses from the air in recent years. There are currently over 550 playing golf courses of varying sizes, covering about 1% of Scotland’s land use, from islands to mainland coastal and inland courses.

All golf courses are man-made designed landscapes, though many have taken advantage of the natural topography and geology of Scotland, creating a wide variation in course design across the country. The different styles and landscape settings of each course can best be seen from the air. Some courses seem always to have been there, many built on common ground while others are on land with previous histories as gardens or farmland.

This gallery highlights a small selection of images from recent aerial survey work. Visit Canmore to see what other material we hold for all Scottish golf courses.
