Golf in Scotland

12/03/2014

Within the RCAHMS collections there is a large volume of imagery and archive relating to the sport of golf in Scotland including architectural plans for clubhouses, design schemes for courses and historic photography of golfers, often on courses in the swing of a game. A number of images are of buildings which no longer exist, some are purpose built clubhouses or pavilions and others have had long histories before a golfer ever set foot in them as a club member or visitor. The range of different buildings and structures shown also illustrates the social aspect of the sport and the role of the members club, how golf and the railways were closely connected and the effect on the hotel industry, as well as the sheer popularity of the sport and its historic connection to Scotland. In recent years RCAHMS has carried out survey photography to complement our existing holdings and to record for the first time some notable buildings associated with the game of golf. This gallery showcases a small sample of images from the archives in RCAHMS. Visit Canmore to see what other material we hold for all Scottish golf courses.
