Food and Drink in Scotland

Scotland is fortunate to have a world-class natural larder, and food and drink has for centuries been a core part of Scottish cultural identity and heritage from haggis, oatcakes and Tunnock’s teacakes to whisky and beer. Our National Collection includes a wealth of material illustrating and recording this heritage both past and present, and this gallery highlights images from the collections of distilleries and breweries, farming and fishing, factories, shops, cafes and restaurants, kitchens, bakeries and food markets from the whole of Scotland, many of them now lost. The collection includes historic photographs, architectural plans, engravings and sketches, modern survey photographs and drawings, as well as modern and historical aerial photographs.
This gallery has been created to commemorate Scotland's Year of Food and Drink 2015. This is a Scottish Government initiative led in partnership by Event Scotland, Visit Scotland and Scotland Food & Drink. The aim of Year of Food and Drink 2015 is to highlight, celebrate and develop Scotland's reputation as a Land of Food and Drink.
All the collections can be consulted in our Search Room and online resources. We also maintain an active digitisation programme, with new images being added to the Canmore database every day.

The original cupolas of the vaulted roof structure were removed in the 1960s when the Denaston Mill site was converted into a distillery. The former weaving shed became a bonded warehouse at this point and light exclusion and HM Customs security requirements ensured that the building was remodelled.
