NH 7988 0328 The desk-based assessment identified a flat, raised platform adjoining the steading, surrounded with field stone walls, on the 1st Edition OS 6” map of 1870. A walkover survey on 7 September 2012 located the site, which was identified as a mid-19th-century stackyard, probably constructed at the same time as the steading and farmhouse. Considerable work must have been required to level off the top of a natural knoll and it seems possible that this might have been done with the intention of building here. The substantial wall constructed around the stackyard, 19th-century in character, would have formed a very effective barrier to livestock.
