A one week field trip to the Outer Hebrides was organised by Jill Harden and principally focussed on a visit to the Flannan Isles, but also including various sites in Lewis and Harris, the latter including the well-preserved huts at Both a'Chlair Beag.
Archaeologists on the trip included Strat Halliday, Mark Thacker (PhD Candidate, University of Edinburgh), John Raven and George Geddes, the last of whom was representing RCAHMS through part of the Special Survey Programme.
Site descriptions were drafted by members of the expedition and finalised by RCAHMS before entry into the Canmore database.

Linked by concrete steps, the landing consists of four concrete stages set onto the cliff which provided a quay, the support for a crane, and the starting point for a tramway that led to the lighthouse itself. | 995274 | RECORDING | FIELD VISIT | Both a’Chlair Bhig [bothies of the little plain] is a group of seven well-preserved shieling-huts, one of which is still roofed, which, together with an enclosure and pens, straddle the Abhainn a’ Chlair Bhig where it flows NW through undulating peaty moorland towards flatter ground at the head of Loch Reasort. Five of the huts stand on the SW bank of the river; the remaining two huts, the enclosure and the pens lie on the NE bank. The site has clearly been used for many years, though not necessarily continuously. It probably remained in summer use until the early 19th century, when most of the townships of Harris were cleared of their agricultural tenants (Lawson 2002). [...] | 3 June 2014 |
