The Seafield Road poorhouse was built in 1906-8, after North and South Leith became united for poor-law purposes. It was to accommodate about 650 inmates. It was the last poorhouse built in Scotland.

It was requisitioned as Leith War Hospital in the First World War, providing beds for 165 officers and 420 other ranks. The hospital was transferred to the use of the US Navy in 1918.
