Site recorded by GUARD during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, 'The Firth of Forth from Dunbar to the Coast of Fife' 18th February 1996.

Large traditional type of capstan situated on top of concrete platform immediately SE of the S end of the E pier.

The capstan has been painted in black and white vertical strips and was made by Douglas & Grant Ltd Engineers in 1917 at their Kirkcaldy works.

The concrete platform has metal hatches opening to several compartments.

The Civil Engineers plan (185/62, 12 October 1959), plan shows this as a capstan and inflammable stores.
