Ancrum Mausoleum is in course of erection on the Ancrum Estate solely for the use of General Monteath Douglas of Stonebyres. Sited on Lillards Edge, a little to the west of Jedburgh Turnpike. A chamber 16 feet square is excavated out of the rock, lined with ashlars and reached through an arched doorway from which massive abutments reach out. The top of the chamber is level with the highest point of the ridge. The ornamental part of the structure is carried to a height of 50 feet. The contractor was Mr Harkness, builder, Hawick. It is to be finished by Midsummer.
