Kinkell Castle is named and depicted (NAT or in non-antiquity type) on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd editions of the 1-inch to the mile map (Arbroath, 1888 (surveyed 1855-7) and 1896 (surveyed 1894) , sheet 49). An associated dovecot is also depicted. Kinkell Castle nor the associated dovecot are depicted on the Ordnance Survey 3rd edition 1-inch to the mile map (Arbroath, 1907 (surveyed 1904-5), sheet 49).

There is a depiction of Kinekll Castle in a portfolio of drawings by John Oliphant and held at St Andrews University Special Collections (Oliphant Crawings Collection, catalogue number OLI-2, 'The Ruins of the Castle of Kinkell on the sea coast situated about one mile from St Andrews', pen and wash, circa 1767).
