Trial excavations on a gap site due for redevelopment within the limits of the 16th century defences produced no evidence for occupation earlier than the late 16th and 17th centuries, when a midden deposit accumulated. Construction of St John's Church in the 1820's, other later buildings and subsequent 19th century landscaping had removed deposits from a large part of the site.
