(NY 0819 8255) Market Cross (NR) (15th century)

OS 25" map (1881)

Lately restored market cross on modern base. Probably that built c. 1612 to replace the ancient cross destroyed in the Albany Raid in 1484. Above a moulded cornice there are sun-dials on four sides, and a ball on top as terminal.

Small says of the cross that it 'stands in the outside angle of one of the principal buildings of the town'.

Name Book 1856-98; J W Small 1900; R Fraser 1936

A market cross, as described above and formerly situated outside the SE corner of the Burgh Offices, at NY 0819 8257. It was removed before 1958 to its present position at NY 0805 8256 (Town Clerk, Lochmaben).

Visited by OS (RD), 24 June 1966.
