NX66NE 3 6972 6980

(NX 6972 6980) Kirkland Mote (NR)

OS 6" map (1958)

This motte (R W Feachem 1956) is a truncated cone of earth and stone, probably artificial, with many large boulders exposed on the sides by the burrowing of rabbits. It is surrounded by a well-defined trench 25' broad with a flat bottom 7' across and a maximum depth of about 8'. A rampart on the counterscarp is indicated in places by a line of large boulders. The motte stands about 27' high from the bottom of the trench. There is no definite indication of a base-court, but towards the south the natural surface of the ground may have been levelled for a distance of some 30' out from the rampart. The site is overgrown with trees and much burrowed by rabbits.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1912.

Kirkland Mote (name confirmed) is as described.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (EGC), 5 August 1968.
