(NX 7165 5745) Mote (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Kirkcormack Motte is situated at the bend of the River Dee and has Kirkcormack Church (NX75NW 11) in its bailey (Trans Dumfriesshire Galloway Natur Hist Antiq Soc 1961). It rises c.20' above the river,

and 14' above the bottom of a 20' wide ditch which surrounds it on top of the river bank. The ditch has been considerably destroyed by field dykes on the S and SW. The motte's summit is an irregular oval, 67' by 56', but its edge is considerably broken away towards the NE. There is a slight depression on the summit.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911; F R Coles 1891

A motte generally as described although the ditch can now be traced on the west. There is no evidence of a bailey. The name is not in local use.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 16 February 1972.
