Fleet Bridge [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1993.

Fleet Bridge. Stone bridge of 1729-30 replaced a wooden 17th century bridge. Three successive widenings in 1771, 1811 and 1965. Double arched with central buttresses.

(Location cited as NX 598 562). Fleet Bridge: a single-arched bridge in whinstone and sandstone, dates from the early 18th century. Recently replaced by a modern cement and aluminium bridge.

The bridge is similar to that at Skyreburn (NX55SE 9).

I Donnachie 1971.

The Fleet Bridge carries Fleet Street (a westwards continuation of High Street) across the Water of Fleet in the centre of Gatehouse of Fleet. The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Girthon (to the E) and Anwoth (to the W).

The location assigned to this record defines the midpoint of the structure. The available map evidence indicates that it extends from NX c. 59812 56210 to NX c. 59834 56221.
